Josh Watched: Bridesmaids

Honestly, there aren’t many things to be said about Bridesmaids that haven’t been said before by people who actually get paid to do this. As I’m not getting paid, and because of the masturbatory nature of this blog, why the hell not?

Bridesmaids should go down in cinematic history as a minor landmark. Kristen Wiig has taken the Apatow-approved Hal Ashby-with-more-dick-jokes formula and managed to jettison the boys’ club without really alienating anyone.  What’s more, a premise that is tailor-made for a sub-par rom-com is molded into comedy gold with a solid dramatic core. These characters are not the one-dimensional bimbos that fill out Kate Hudson’s resume, but real women with actual problems that don’t include luring some dreamy dude into what will eventually become an absolute sham of a marriage. Oh, and these women have bodily functions, too. Sure, this will be absolutely horrifying for the misogynist bros out there, but a scene involving copious vomiting and defecation produced from women might just be the most progressive thing to come out of the studio system this year. Though decidedly out of the realm of high cinema, Bridesmaids represents the tiniest little step forward for mainstream American film. Also, it’s kinda funny.
